Maya Jackson
Maya Jackson, born and raised in Richmond, VA, graduated from VCUarts with a BFA in Photography and Film. Her work focuses on challenging photography as documentation, “truthful” imagery, and introspection through self portraiture as a form of meditation. While she focuses on making primarily image-based art, her practice also includes poetry, sculptural installation, and video. An active participant in the local arts community, she is currently a lead mentor and instructor of photography classes at Oakwood Arts, a nonprofit whose goal is to make art and careers in creative industries accessible to everyone. In the summer of 2018, Maya completed an artist residency at the GlogauAIR studios in Berlin, Germany, followed by an exhibition entitled Sixty-Seven. Her work appeared in the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in January 2019, in a group exhibition titled The Art of Freedom, where local Virginia artists responded to a call of what freedom means to them. In addition to creating personal work, since March of 2020 Maya is the Studio Manager and in-house Photographer at Dementi Studio, which is Richmond’s oldest photographic studio.
